Law

Gender

If you haven’t done so already it’s worth going to moralmachine.net where you have to solve moral dilemmas of a driverless car, for example who should die, two dogs or a female athlete and an elderly woman? (I guess this was an easy one, but you can accuse me of being a speciesist.)

The machine is looking whether upholding the law is important, whether passengers in the car should be protected first, whether fitness, gender, social class and species play a role. Whether intervention is important or not.

In real life of course it’s impossible to determine whether you are going to kill a criminal or an athlete while driving, so perhaps certain moral judgments should never become moral judgments in the first place, they should remain coincidence, a lottery, a tragedy, a game that the gods were playing with us.
