Self-control

Biography

I was just rereading part of Hitler’s biography by Volker Ullrich – it was around 7 pm in New York – when my stomach began to hurt so badly that I immediately thought that I was dying.
Since the cleaning lady was cleaning my apartment I found it inappropriate to die on the spot. I acted as if all was well, and said to myself: ‘When she is gone I will die.’
Civilization is first and foremost self-control.
