Op 14 mei zal Arnon Grunberg de jaarlijkse Abraham Kuyper Lezing geven als Vrije Schrijver aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Als het nodig is verdedigen we onze democratische samenleving met geweld. Maar het geweld waarmee de staat de samenleving beschermt, maakt ook slachtoffers: soldaten worden uitgezonden naar oorlogsgebieden, mensen worden in gesloten instellingen geplaatst.

Hoe denken en spreken we over deze moderne mensenoffers? Volgens religieuze verhalen was aartsvader Abraham bereid zijn zoon te offeren toen God het vroeg. Hij gehoorzaamde blind uit vrees en ontzag maar zonder te begrijpen waarom. Wat doet ons gehoorzamen aan ethiek, wet en gezag? Zijn we bang voor straf of hebben we een diepe angst voor wetteloosheid? Grunberg ging met de filosofische klassieker Vrees en beven van Kierkegaard onder de arm op onderzoek uit en liet zich daarbij bijstaan door studenten. Hij houdt dit jaar de Abraham Kuyper Lezing ‘Blinde gehoorzaamheid’.

On May 14th, Arnon Grunberg will give the annual Abraham Kuyper Lecture as Writer in Residence at de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

If necessary, we defend our democracy by force. But the force which the state uses to protect us also creates victims: soldiers are deployed to warzones, and people who are deemed a threat to society are placed in secure institutions.

How do we think and talk about these modern-day human sacrifices? According to scripture, the patriarchal figure of Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son at God’s command, obeying blindly out of fear and awe, without understanding why. What makes us obey ethical codes, laws and authority? Is it fear of punishment? Or is it an even more profound fear of chaos and lawlessness? Grunberg explored these questions with reference to Kierkegaard’s philosophical classic Fear and Trembling. He was assisted by a number of students. He will present the results of his research in this year’s Abraham Kuyper Lecture, entitled Blind Obedience.
