“Secularisatie is het ten einde gedachte christendom waarvan het humanisme (christendom zonder Jezus) slechts het voorspel is. Contradicties, fundamentele behoeftes zijn daarmee natuurlijk niet verdwenen. God moet de problemen oplossen. Of de mensen zelf moeten dat doen. En als ze dat zelf gaan doen, gaan ze vroeg of laat voor God spelen.”
Voor NRC schreef Arnon Grunberg een stuk over het universalisme met of zonder God, de honger naar rechtvaardigheid en de belofte van verzadiging. Het stuk verscheen naar aanleiding van de recente publicatie van Arnons nieuwe boek Mogen we nog een beetje leven? en is hier te lezen.
“Secularization is Christianity taken to its logical conclusion, of which humanism (Christianity without Jesus) is merely the prelude. Contradictions and fundamental needs, of course, have not disappeared as a result. God must solve the problems. Or people must do so themselves. And if they take it upon themselves to do so, sooner or later they will start playing God.”
