“Hoewel Twain zijn schrijvende leven als journalist begon – misschien was dat de afgrond waarin hij viel, want God weet dat de journalistiek een ware afgrond is – had hij zich nooit al te veel bekommerd om het principe dat een journalist de waarheid moest verkondigen. Hij fabuleerde er lustig op los, tot hij de journalistiek verliet en in zijn romans vaak zo dicht bij de werkelijkheid bleef dat de lezer misschien zou willen dat de romanschrijver er wat meer op los gefabuleerd had.”
Voor De Groene Amsterdammer schreef Arnon Grunberg een portret over Samuel Clemens (1835-1910), beter bekend onder de naam Mark Twain, waarin Arnon onder meer Twains romans De avonturen van Huckleberry Finn en De avonturen van Tom Sawyer bespreekt. Het stuk is hier online te lezen.
Daarnaast verscheen in de laatste editie van het Duitse cultuurblad Lettre International de Duitse vertaling van Arnons essay over het werk van graficus en schilder Félicien Rops, dat eerder in NRC stond.
“Although Twain began his writing career as a journalist – perhaps that was the abyss into which he fell, for God knows that journalism is a veritable abyss – he had never been overly concerned with the principle that a journalist must report the truth. He fabricated things with gusto, until he left journalism and, in his novels, often stayed so close to reality that the reader might wish the novelist had let his imagination run a little wilder.”
For the June 24, 2026, issue of De Groene Amsterdammer, Arnon Grunberg wrote a profile about Samuel Clemens (1835-1910), better known as Mark Twain. He discusses, among other things, Twain’s novels The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (the Dutch translation of the latter was recently revised by Peter Bergsma). The latest issue of the German cultural magazine Lettre International includes the German translation of Arnon’s essay on the work of graphic artist and painter Félicien Rops, which previously appeared in NRC.
