On ICC – Amir Tibon in Haaretz;
‘Did the International Criminal Court commit suicide last week by issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant? The question arises after observing the responses in the United States, where Donald Trump will become president in less than two months and will rule with the assistance of GOP majorities in both houses of Congress.
The incoming Trump administration and Republican Party were never likely to be big fans of the ICC to begin with. But for the international court to begin the four long years of Trump's second term with a bombshell decision against two high-ranking Israelis was a bold risk by the panel of judges who approved the request.’

‘It is perhaps the fear of this scenario that has led the ICC to suggest that if Israel provided proof that it was conducting its own reliable and independent investigation into alleged war crimesand violations of international law committed by soldiers in Gaza, then the arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant could be shelved for now.
This presents a second scenario – one that would be good for Israel and could perhaps also save the court itself: An internal Israeli investigation might convince the court to freeze the warrants, at least temporarily. Israel's own attorney general, it should be noted, has been telling the government for months that the best way to combat the warrants and other threats in the international legal arena is to announce the formation of a national commission of inquiry into October 7 and the Gaza war.’

‘Last week, hours after the arrest warrants were issued, the Hungarian government announced it would invite Netanyahu to visit Budapest. Obviously, such an invitation means the prime minister won't be arrested upon landing in Hungary.’

‘Another way to examine the different responses from these European governments is to look at their policies regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Before Netanyahu's arrest warrant was issued, the most important recent decision made by the ICC was the March 2023 issuance of an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin. This decision was beneficial to Putin's European, pro-Ukrainian rivals, who would very much like the court that issued his arrest warrant to remain relevant.
Putin has been trying – so far, with undeniable success – to make a mockery of the arrest warrant against him. Earlier this year he traveled to Mongolia – a country that is supposedly bound by the decisions of the ICC. However, last month he avoided attending the G20 international summit in Brazil. His biggest achievement so far in ridiculing the ICC actually took place on Russian soil, when he hosted UN Secretary-General António Guterres last month and was warmly embraced by his prominent visitor.’

The stupid stubbornness of the Israeli government, one is tempted to say, is beyond belief.
Most probably the stubbornness is just immense arrogance, Netanyahu and his allies see that internationalism is dying and that you should be able to get away with everything, see: Trump, or fade away in prison.
The jungle rules once again, at least more openly than before.
ICC will survive, but it will be survival in theory.
