It’s widely assumed here that a Dutch speaking person is fluent in Afrikaans.
Tonight I listened to readings by Afrikaner poets, and I was unable to understand more than fifty percent of their poetry.
The evening was concluded with a “braai”.
A professor at Stellenbosch University said: “The devoted reader is probably better off not meeting the author.”
