Violence

Classic

“Oliver Twist” is one of the classics I haven’t read.
This afternoon, I saw Roman Polanski’s movie adaptation of the novel at the MoMa. I was pleasantly surprised, the movie is a tad sentimental – I guess the novel is a tad sentimental, but Ben Kingsley as Fagin was impressive. Surprisingly for a Polanski movie, there was almost no eroticism. I guess in Polanski’s (and perhaps Dickens’) take on the early years of capitalism, violence was sex for the proletariat.
