Passports and permanent residence cards are already for sale in many countries. (The US is not an exception.) Should countries be for sale?
Jeanna Smialek writes in the NYT: ‘In the Truth Social post, Mr. Trump demanded a deal to buy Greenland, saying that otherwise he would slap tariffs on a group of European nations.’
Smialek adds: ‘Hitting back is complicated [for the EU].’
A German newspaper reported that 15 German soldiers that were sent to Greenland returned to Germany after two days.
A trade war with the US, a possibility. A real war? No.
Smialek quotes Jacob Funk Kirkegaard, a senior fellow at Bruegel, a research institute in Brussels: ‘We either fight a trade war, or we’re in a real war.’
The EU should tell Trump: ‘Make us an offer we cannot refuse. You buy Greenland, you get Denmark and Albania for free.’
Then declare: ‘Peace for our times.’
