On self-deportation, T.M. Brown in NYT: ‘In a commercial from last summer — in which D.H.S. Secretary Kristi Noem promotes the C.B.P. Home app, which lets unauthorized immigrants “safely” self-deport — she appears in front of a shining red tactical map, with digitized globes. (…) When I saw it, I was immediately struck by how the imagery resembled the work of a single director who often inserts absurd commercials into his feature films: Paul Verhoeven.’
Verhoeven is a visionary, hailed by both left-wing and right-wing activists. Although one critic dismissed his movie Starship Troppers as just ‘half beach blanket bingo, half Iwo Jima.’
Brown concludes that ‘when a message is delivered by machine guns and space cannons (…) it’s easy to (…) decide that the indulgences of explosive violence are a lot more fun than any lessons about authoritarianism.’
No distractions anymore, just straightforward lessons about authoritarianism. That’s how you should heal the world.
