“Liberace” – Mr. Soderbergh’s movie about an exceptional piano player, Wladziu Valentino Liberace, is a must-see because of Michael Douglas as Liberace. Yes, Matt Damon is pretty good as well, but Michael Douglas is stunning.
Most of this movie is about the egotism, the cynicism, the destruction and sadism masked as love, of the entertainment industry. The ending of the movie is schmaltzy, or at best the ending makes the point that talent and success are a guarantee of redemption. If you are successful enough almost everything will be forgiven.
According to this movie Mr. Liberace (I had never heard of him) was an extremely extravagant piano player who had a weak spot for young men, but was keen on convincing the rest of the world that he was perfectly heterosexual.
Interestingly enough this movie could not secure a distributor in the U.S.
