Last week I went to Bad Reichenhall to visit the Hochstaufen barack. Today I went back to talk to a Company Sergeant Major who had been in combat in Afghanistan.
We talked for more than an hour. He drew his positions and the positions of the enemy on a piece of paper. He talked without any pathos. “Some of my soldiers," he said, "like combat, they long for it. As for me, it’s part of my job, but it’s always better if we can go home safely without having used our weapon.”
