Nightmare

Teamwork

On hell, exaggerations and Iran – Amos Harel in Haaretz:

‘CNN, which waged a bloody battle against Donald Trump throughout his presidency, supplied the most melodramatic summation. The network’s chief Washington correspondent, Jake Tapper, ended his remarks projecting Biden’s win with a nod to President Gerald Ford’s inaugural speech in 1974, after Richard Nixon resigned in disgrace in the wake of Watergate: “It must be said, to paraphrase President Ford, for tens of millions of our fellow Americans, their long national nightmare is over.” His colleague Van Jones, wiping away tears, said what many people throughout the world must have felt: “It’s easier to be a parent this morning,” he said. “It’s easier to be a dad. “It’s easier to tell your kids character matters. It matters. Telling the truth matters. Being a good person matters.”’

(…)

‘And Biden has an important advantage over Trump: He understands teamwork and he tends to listen to experts, on the coronavirus and also on foreign relations.’

(…)

‘No less important is what will happen with Iran. Trump took a tough line against Tehran, withdrawing from the 2018 nuclear agreement and enacting a sanctions regime of unprecedented proportions. But the president also did not conceal his intention to sign a new deal with the Iranians after the election – and Netanyahu is well aware that it could end as the North Korean affair did, with an extremely flawed agreement that Trump will present to the world as a “yuge” achievement.
Biden will also try to reach a deal with Tehran. The question is whether he’ll seek to avoid the mistakes of his predecessors, Trump and Barack Obama. Iran won’t hesitate to exploit his missteps, should there be any.’

A bloody war is a Trumpian exaggeration, but fair enough.

I’m not sure what Obama’s mistakes were regarding Iran and I don’t believe that the outgoing president will sign a new deal with Iran in the coming weeks.
He has other things on his mind.

And by the way, the so-called peace agreement between Israel and the UAE and the slightly secret agreement between Israel and Saudi-Arabia have so much do with Iran. We could almost call Iran a sponsor of these agreements.
Nothing better for rapprochement than a common enemy.
