Elements

Flare-ups

On elections once again – Jack Khoury in Haaretz:

‘In the coming elections, there will be a new element to consider: the United Arab List will want the Arab voters' confidence as an independent faction that will join the Israeli coalition. The party and its leader, Mansour Abbas, will play up every one of its achievements on budgets and resources, and promise future progress vis-à-vis any government – even one led by opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu. There will be plenty of solutions for any civil issues; any policy issues, the campaign will try to avoid.
Admitting failure is a death sentence as far as the party is concerned, and all the more so for its chairman Abbas. So the United Arab List will go to the polls with limited success to show for itself, and will hope that no major security flare-ups throw a wrench in the works before the election. In this regard, the coming Jewish holidays will be a challenge.

At the same time, the Joint List, from which Abbas' party broke off, plans to present every United Arab List achievement as minor, and as selling its principles for a mess of pottage. The religious and nationalist elements will take center-stage in the Joint List's campaigns, with Al-Aqsa mosque and the occupation in the starring role.’

So, the Israelis will head to the polls once again this fall.
Netanyahu might be back, might, in the same way that Trump might be back. But Netanyahu has better chances at the moment.

The disappointment and even disgust of the Arabs in Israel is only understandable. The government fell because it was unable to pass a law that has been renewed the last decades automatically and that turns Palestinians on the West Bank into second class citizens.
Likud of course was for the law, but voted against it, in order to topple the government. They succeeded.

Successful strategies in democracies often have little to do with problem solving, unfortunately, and everything with subtle and less subtle contemporary Machiavellianism.
