Villages

Person

Last night I hosted an event, which is to say I had a conversation in front of an audience, with Adania Shibli.
See also here.
We spoke about silence and language, transformation, different names for one and the same person and villages that disappeared, the care for the plants that are still there and the resistance against anger.
I recommend her novels, especially her last novel ‘Minor Detail’. Not in the last place because the absence of anger, Shibli appeared to abhor anger, which is one of several things I share with her. We also share Coetzee, and I would say, the realization that family secrets are the main source of fiction.
