War

Every effort

An excellent article by Ron Stodghill in the Times today: “A House Divided: Uncivil War on E. 73rd.” A story about the struggle between a landlord, Mr. Pavia, and his tenant, Mr. Couri, and another tenant who got in Mr. Couri’s way.
A quote: ‘“I have made every effort to placate and get along with Mr. Couri per your request. I have not played my music above one-quarter of its volume capacity, nor have I played any music after 11:30 p.m.,” he wrote. “I have not entertained any guests. I have taken my shoes off at the door and walked around as lightly as possible in my stocking feet.”' One is reminded of The Tenant, the novel by Roland Topor.
