In het essay gaat Arnon in op de mannelijke blik, weemoed, naaktheid en schoonheid (al dan niet door AI gegenereerd). Het stuk, dat eerder al in NRC stond, is vertaald door Thomas Stegers.
“At some point in the history of art, not that long ago, the idea arose that the artist ought to make injustice his theme and, through his art, help combat it. The established order —rotten, corrupt, and unjust —must be dismantled, or corrected in such a way that one can speak of a gentle dismantling. Sometimes this leads to aesthetic platitudes (slavery and the Holocaust were a disgrace; the world must become a better place, preferably today), which are occasionally received with approval.”
The latest issue of the German cultural magazine Lettre International (Summer 2026) features Arnon Grunberg’s essay on the work of illustrator and painter Félicien Rops.
