I went back to the mental institution where I was embedded this summer. According to my contract I gave “an objective and independent” presentation about my stay for the staff and the patients with whom I was embedded.
The presentation was followed by a discussion about suffering. Much of the suffering of the psychotic patients had escaped me and some people were offended by this statement.
But as a psychiatrist said over dinner: “The psychosis is a solution to a problem.”
