From Wole Soyinka's play 'A Dance of the Forests (1960)':

'OLD MAN: (...) We asked for statesmen and we were sent executioners.'

One could argue that still people ask for statesmen and are being sent executioners, but one could also argue that part of the population is rather happy with some executioners disguised as statesmen.
